Apixaban Better than Rivaroxaban for VTE, Finds Study

A new study, published in Annals of Internal Medicine, noted that apixaban was safer and more effective compared to rivaroxaban in reducing the risk of venous thromboembolism and bleeding. 

The retrospective analysis of data from around 40,000 patients assessed recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE) (a composite of pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis) as the primary outcome. Safety evaluation included a composite of intracranial and gastrointestinal bleeding. Following a median of 102 days of follow-up in the apixaban group and 105 days in the rivaroxaban group, apixaban was found to be superior in terms of both primary outcomes. Apixaban led to a 23% lower rate of recurrent VTE, with a 15% lower rate of deep vein thrombosis and a 41% lower rate of pulmonary embolism. It was also tied to 40% lesser bleeding events, with a lower rate of GI bleeding by 40% and a 46% lower rate of intracranial bleeding… (Medscape)
